I have an unusual love story for you today, and then I’m going to ask you on a date. 

Short story first:

A few years after I left my investment banking job, I had a really strange experience one night. I was living in Sedona, Arizona, and somewhere around 10:30pm, in that hazy space between sleeping and wakefulness, I woke up to a crystalline clear, powerful voice in my mind.

It said:

“What’s important for you is to be in love with your spoken word.”

I woke out of my daze, scurried to find a piece of paper and a pen, and wrote down these words.

I’ve carried this piece of paper with me everywhere for the last many years.

These words have helped me to find clarity and the commitment to speak up when I’ve been terrified.

They have stirred me awake from the “numb” times of my life when I was simply making decisions that kept leading me silently away from speaking up.

It’s easy to fall asleep in our lives and to let life pass us by without speaking up and claiming our place on the public stage of life.

It’s so easy to listen to the thoughts of “Not now,” “Someone else is already saying that,” “It’s too late,” and to dumb down and stay silent as a result. And we suffer.

Here’s what you are really suffering from: a lack of true intimacy and adventure with your spoken word. 

This Valentines Day, whether you have a honey or not, I want you to focus on a different kind of romance: I want you to take your voice out on a date.

– Sit down and write out the bullet points and ideas for that epic talk you want to give.

– Make some bold phone calls to people or organizations that you feel could benefit from hearing your message. Tell them why you want to speak to their listeners , how it would support them, and then ask for the opportunity to do so.
